Air Conditioning (AU07605)

Your car's air conditioning is essential for comfort during South Australia's warmer months, but if it isn't working properly, it may be time for a professional inspection.

At West Car Clinic, we provide automotive air conditioning regas, repairs, servicing and inspections for drivers in Ridgehaven, Tea Tree Gully and the surrounding areas. Our team can assess your vehicle's A/C system and recommend the right approach to help restore reliable cooling performance. Can Your Car's Air Conditioning Affect Fuel Consumption? In petrol and diesel vehicles, running the air conditioning places an additional load on the engine and can increase fuel consumption. However, the amount varies depending on the vehicle, driving conditions and how the system is used.

If your air conditioning isn't cooling effectively, the cause could be low refrigerant, a leak, worn seals, a faulty compressor or another component problem. Refrigerant doesn't normally need frequent topping up in a properly functioning, sealed system, so a low level should be investigated rather than treated as a routine refill. Why Is Regular Air Conditioning Inspection Important? Rubber seals, hoses and other components can deteriorate over time, potentially allowing refrigerant to escape. An inspection can help identify signs of leakage and other faults before they lead to further problems.

Following your vehicle manufacturer's maintenance recommendations and having the system checked before summer can help identify developing issues early. If your A/C is blowing warm air, cooling intermittently or making unusual noises, professional diagnosis is recommended. West Car Clinic holds ARCTick Refrigerant Trading Authorisation (AU07605), for automotive air conditioning work. Our team can assess your system and advise whether a refrigerant recharge, leak repair or further servicing is required.

Is Keeping Your Cool Costing You Fuel?

A Warning Car Owners About Coolant Mixing If you’ve ever popped the bonnet and noticed that your car’s coolant level is running low, it might be tempting to grab any old coolant to top it up. After all, it’s just coolant – right? Not quite. Using the wrong coolant or mixing different types, even those that are the same colour, can cause significant damage to your engine’s cooling system. Here’s why it’s crucial to understand what’s in your car’s cooling system and what to do if you’re unsure. Why You Shouldn’t Mix Coolants Modern vehicles use a wide range of coolants, each formulated with specific chemicals to suit particular engine designs. These coolants often contain ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, water, and corrosion inhibitors tailored for different engine materials, such as aluminium, or specific driving conditions, such as heavy-duty use in diesel engines.

The catch is that not all coolants are compatible. Mixing coolants with different chemical compositions can result in reactions that may damage your engine. For instance, some mixtures create corrosive acids that eat away at vital components, while others produce a thick, gel-like substance that clogs the cooling system. Both scenarios can lead to overheating, leaks, and expensive repairs. But Aren’t Coolants Colour-Coded? While coolant colours like green, red, pink, and blue may seem like a quick guide to compatibility, the reality is more complex. Colour is merely a dye added by manufacturers and is no longer a reliable indicator of a coolant’s chemical properties. This means that two coolants of the same colour might not be compatible, making it even more critical to know precisely what’s in your system. What to Do If Your Coolant Is Low If you find your coolant level below the minimum line and you’re unsure what type of coolant is already in your car, resist the urge to guess or mix products. Instead, top up the system with clean water – either tap or demineralised water is fine as a short-term solution. Water won’t harm your cooling system temporarily and ensures you avoid the risks of incompatible coolants.

Next, bring your car to West Car Clinic in Ridgehaven as soon as possible. Our team of professionals can inspect your cooling system for any underlying issues, such as leaks or contamination, and advise you on the correct coolant for your vehicle. A thorough inspection can save you from costly repairs down the road and keep your engine running smoothly. Additional Safety Tips for Handling Coolant Always check your car owner’s manual for the recommended coolant type and replacement intervals. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot – the pressurised system can release scalding steam and coolant, causing serious burns. If you notice your car is consuming more coolant than usual, it may indicate a leak or other problem that needs immediate attention. Remember, ethylene glycol-based coolant is highly toxic. Keep it out of reach of children and animals, and clean up any spills promptly. By acting quickly when you notice low coolant levels and avoiding mixing coolants, you can protect your car’s engine and ensure it stays in top condition. If in doubt, top up with water temporarily and visit West Car Clinic in Ridgehaven for expert guidance. Avoid Coolant Chaos: A Must-Know Guide for Car Owners Your car’s cooling system works tirelessly to keep the engine at its optimal temperature. However, maintaining it properly requires attention to detail – especially when it comes to coolant. Here’s everything you need to know about avoiding costly mistakes, protecting your car, and seeking professional help when needed.

If in doubt, top up with water temporarily and visit West Car Clinic in Ridgehaven for expert advise, or for safe measures get your vehicle towed to us for assessment and repairs. Understanding the Role of Coolant Coolant isn’t just about keeping your engine cool. It also prevents corrosion, lubricates moving parts, and ensures your car runs efficiently. But not all coolants are the same. The chemical composition varies based on the needs of specific engine designs, and using the wrong type can have serious consequences. The Dangers of Mixing Coolants Mixing incompatible coolants, even if they’re the same colour, can create significant problems. Chemical reactions between different coolants can lead to:

- Corrosion inside your engine, damaging seals and components.
- Sludge or gel build-up, which clogs the cooling system.
- Overheating, which can cause engine damage if not addressed quickly.

These risks underline the importance of using only the coolant specified by your car manufacturer or recommended by professionals. Safe Steps When Low on Coolant If your coolant level is low but you’re unsure what type is in your system, follow these steps: Don’t add a random coolant. Even similar-looking products can cause issues when mixed. Top up with water temporarily. Clean tap water or demineralised water is safe for short-term use. Seek professional help. Toyota vehicles are known for their practicality, reliability and wide range of models, from everyday Corollas and Camrys to Hilux, LandCruiser, RAV4 and hybrid vehicles. Regular servicing is an important part of maintaining your Toyota's reliability, safety and performance throughout its life. If you are looking for Toyota log book servicing in Ridgehaven, West Car Clinic can service a wide range of Toyota models according to the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance requirements. Whether your Toyota is petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric, our qualified technicians can help keep it properly maintained. Toyota Log Book Servicing to Manufacturer Specifications A Toyota log book service involves more than changing the oil and filters. The maintenance required can vary depending on the model, engine, age, kilometres travelled and scheduled service interval. At West Car Clinic, servicing is carried out with the manufacturer's requirements in mind. Depending on your Toyota and the service due, this can include scheduled replacement items, fluid checks, brake inspections, steering and suspension checks, tyre inspections and appropriate diagnostic testing. Regular servicing also provides an opportunity to identify wear, leaks or developing faults before they become more significant repairs. Do You Have to Service Your Toyota at a Toyota Dealer? No. Australian Consumer Law does not require you to have your Toyota routinely serviced exclusively by an authorised Toyota dealership.

A suitably qualified independent workshop can carry out scheduled servicing when the appropriate requirements are followed, suitable parts and fluids are used and the work is completed to the manufacturer's specifications.

This gives Toyota owners the freedom to choose a local workshop they trust. If your Toyota is still covered by a manufacturer's warranty, West Car Clinic can discuss its servicing requirements with you and complete the scheduled maintenance appropriately. Toyota Servicing for Petrol, Diesel and Hybrid Models Toyota has one of the broadest ranges of powertrains available to Australian motorists, and different Toyota models have different servicing requirements.

Whether you own a petrol Corolla, diesel Hilux or LandCruiser, a RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid or another Toyota model, following the correct maintenance schedule is important.

Hybrid vehicles still require regular attention to components such as brakes, suspension, tyres, cabin filters and air conditioning, even though some traditional engine maintenance is different from a conventional petrol vehicle. Modern Toyota Vehicles Need Modern Diagnostics Today's Toyota vehicles increasingly rely on electronic control systems, sensors, driver assistance technology and integrated vehicle computers. This means effective servicing and fault diagnosis can involve considerably more than mechanical inspection.

West Car Clinic has access to advanced diagnostic equipment and technician training to work with modern vehicle technology. This can help when investigating warning lights, fault messages, electronic systems or unusual vehicle behaviour.

Our capabilities also include support for ADAS systems, hybrid and EV-specific inspections and advanced vehicle diagnostics. Toyota Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Servicing Toyota's hybrid range has become increasingly popular with Australian drivers, while newer Toyota electric vehicles bring additional high-voltage systems and specialised servicing requirements.

Through our NexDrive vehicle servicing capabilities, West Car Clinic can support modern EVs, hybrids and advanced petrol vehicles with specialised inspections, diagnostics and repairs.

This means Toyota owners can access a workshop equipped to work with both conventional and newer vehicle technologies.

For more information about our capabilities for EVs, hybrids and advanced petrol vehicles, see our dedicated NexDrive vehicle servicing information. What Can Be Checked During a Toyota Service? The exact requirements depend on your Toyota model and service interval, but scheduled maintenance may include: Engine oil and filter replacement where applicable Brake inspection and assessment Fluid level and condition checks Air and cabin filter inspection or replacement Steering and suspension inspections Tyre and wheel checks Battery and electrical system checks Electronic diagnostic checks where appropriate Inspection for leaks, wear or developing faults Checking the vehicle's scheduled maintenance requirements Additional items may be required according to the age, kilometres and service history of your Toyota.

A properly completed service is therefore an opportunity to assess the overall condition of your vehicle, rather than simply replace a predetermined list of parts. Toyota Service and Repairs in Ridgehaven Whether your Toyota is due for its scheduled log book service, has displayed a warning light or requires further investigation, West Car Clinic can provide local servicing and repair support in Tea Tree Gully area.
